A breakthrough is a state of transcendence. It defines an iconic moment in someone’s life, where one arrives at an elevated state of being – mental, physical or spiritual. Neerajj Mittra’s solo show “Breakthrough” represents this state in his creative journey. A horse bears the testimony of human civilization. It represents times of war and peace; change and continuum; rise and fall. To Mittra, the horse is no longer a mere subject, but a conduit through which he explores his deepest desires and aspirations. This horse traverses through a myriad world of beauty, grace and intrigue created by him. With a powerful forward motion, it is breaking through all the barriers of the past, challenging the present and moving towards the future. For the first time the horse is not his idol, but a companion. Mittra deepens this inquiry through a prolific body of work which includes drawings, paintings and sculptures.
Beyond Japan was an endeavour to bridge the cultural distinctions and parallels between India and Japan through a shared admiration for art. Showcasing the works of sixteen renowned Japanese artists, the exhibition celebrated the unique artistry of Japan, offering audiences a chance to immerse themselves in its rich cultural heritage. Each canvas reflected Japan’s historic painting techniques intertwined with modern artistic expressions, highlighting the country’s legacy of innovation and tradition. The exhibition originated from the Kasagi Gallery, a 50-year-old establishment in Kamakura, founded by the family of the celebrated artist Mr. J. Kasagi. Visitors were captivated by the vibrant works of Reina Taniho on silk, Kyoko Ishihara’s handmade washi paper canvases, and Yoshifumi Nojima’s layered wood bases for his pumpkin series. The profound emotional depth of Kurano’s portraits and the mythological finesse in Joeshin Kowase’s works further showcased the breadth of Japanese artistry. Ideguchi’s whale series evoked the vastness of oceans, while artists like Michelle Sakai, Shinya Tamai, and Kazuko Takayama brought additional layers of creativity and excellence to the display. The intent of Beyond Japan was to spark curiosity and admiration for Japan’s multifaceted art culture. By celebrating the distinctive methods and narratives of its artists, the exhibition paved new avenues for global recognition and interpretation of Japanese artistry, leaving audiences with a profound appreciation for its exemplary heritage.
