Avijit Roy

Born in West Bengal, Avijit Roy completed his Diploma V.A.F.A. from Rabindrabharati University, West Bengal and did his Post Diploma in Graphic Design from the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda. He has several awards and scholarships to his name including International Print Biennial, Bharat Bhawan, Bhopal; Charles Wallace Indian Trust Fellowship and Indian Dutchland Cultural Exchange Programme in Germany. He has several solo shows to his credit in India, U.K., Germany, and Australia, besides having done several workshops in India including Spanish Print Makcr-Capa & Munir Workshop at M S university, and the U.K. His works are part of several national and international collections. The artist lives and works in New Delhi. His initial works included many images of the mammoth black bull in its many manifestations. He experimented with Chine Colle, a simple technique in which subtle color and the textural contrast between rice paper and the base paper are highlighted. His main subject is Bull which is a symbolic form, through which he depicts himself and his inner reactions in different moments. Bull represents power, energy, brutal strength, destruction and playful mood. One bull form may depict different meanings, to put it in one word it is a moving powerhouse – play with power and energy.
